Catalogue Entry

This bird-shaped bottle is thinly formed and was free-blown from greenish translucent glass. Bird-shaped bottles were frequently used to contain powder and other materials, with the material placed in the bottle, the bottle sealed off with glass, and then the sealed tip would have been broken off to start using the contents of the vessel. This example was not one of these sealed containers, but it has the bird formwith a tail which has been pulled out to a peaked shape. A small hole top and one bottom are located at the tail's point of connection with the body, and the bottom is hollowed and the bottle is easily free-standing.
